FOR THOSE CONSIDERING COMPETITION FOR THE FIRST TIME:  here's the question that's been bothering you:

"Can I shoot matches without spending a lot of money on fancy guns?"

And here's the answer:  "YES!"

The gun magazines show the expensive custom-built "Open Class" IPSC guns, with compensators and red-dot sights. What they don't emphasize is that those guns don't compete against shooters with "Limited Class" guns. At matches, it is like two matches running at once, with separate match results for Open and Limited Classes. In 2001, there will also be another new division: Production Division, which will permit only unmodified double-action-first-shot handguns, including Glocks.

To get an idea of what it takes to begin shooting USPSA/IPSC matches (equipment for NRA Action Pistol and Steel Plates is similar and compatible), check out the "Beginner's Equipment Info" link below.   If you have additional questions, feel free to contact me by email at: jmaass@columbus.rr.com.

I recommend that you not go out and spend money on a gun specifically for IPSC or other form of competition without going to a match or two to find out what the other folks are using and what might be right for you. Use what you already have for your first match or two. By doing a little homework, you can save yourself from mistakes (possibly expensive), like the fellow below made in a different sport...
